These Jobs Are Most In-Demand For 2019 — How You Can Take Advantage Of These Growing Fields

  • medical services manager (20% job growth through 2024);
  • medical technologist (14%);
  • nursing assistant (11%);
  • personal care aide (39%); and
  • registered nurse (15%).

Application software developer (31%) and construction laborer (12%) were the two non-healthcare jobs that made the list of top eight in-demand jobs and actually ranked number 1 and 2 respectively as the toughest jobs to fill.

All of these in-demand jobs require specific education and experience, and whether or not you see your current career on the list, you can still take advantage of these growing fields:

Consider a career change

If you are already thinking about a career change but unsure what you want to do, consider one of these in-demand fields . Even if you don’t pick one of these roles exactly, you might find other areas of healthcare, IT or construction that are more suited to you and that still piggyback off the overall industry growth.

One caveat: because specialized training and even certifications or degrees may be required, you need to run the numbers on whether any investment you make into a career change will pay off. Some of these jobs have low median salaries, so even though the job opportunities are there, the payoff may not be worth the investment.

Continue what you do but in the growth industries

Many jobs can translate from one industry to another. Are you a recruiter who can help hire for these in-demand jobs? Are you a blogger who can cover these industries? Are you an accountant, marketer, office manager, or other functional expert who can bring what you do to companies in these industries?

Of course, this presumes that you are open to a different industry. Chasing growth for growth’s sake won’t be worthwhile if you’re miserable at your job. Furthermore, healthcare is the top growth industry now, but other industries may top the list in the future. Rankings are a good reminder to check where your industry falls – is it growing or shrinking?

Start a business that serves these careers

If you don’t want to leave your job but still want to dip a toe in these growing fields, develop a side hustle that serves these growth areas. Let’s say you are an HR manager in a different industry and not looking to leave your job. You could spend some hours sourcing for a recruiting agency that places nurses. Or you can develop professional development training to new hospital hires. If you’re thinking about starting a business anyway and looking for ideas, why not pick a growing field that needs the help?

If your job is on the list, make sure you are paid competitively

If you are already in one of these fields, hopefully you know how in-demand you are. (Ideally, you are keeping tabs on your market by reading job postings, talking to recruiters, etc.). You don’t want to give your boss an ultimatum, just on the basis of these rankings, however you should mark yourself to market and make sure you’re being paid competitively. If not, schedule a meeting with your boss (when you’ve had a chance to prepare!) and negotiate for a raise to take you up to market.

Job rankings are helpful, even if the job you currently have doesn’t make the list, because you can get ideas about what alternatives are out there . If your job isn’t on there, it’s a reminder to take stock of your own field and make sure it still offers the growth or security you need. If your job is on there, it’s a reminder that you have leverage and should be nurturing your career.
